More lava lamp

Homemade bouncy balls - it does eventually stop being sticky.

The boys favorite part of today (at least the two younger ones) - the bike rodeo.

Lego-Man was off on his own for much of the day so no photographic proof of him today.

Day #170/175 Days

June 20, 2012

Cooking Class again today. We're nearing the end, but it's been a lot of fun and we certainly have learned quite a bit.

We made a fruit salad today.

We also made homemade salsa (and toasted our own chips).

We also made our own "soda" with seltzer water and juice.

There is a story behind this photo....Lego-Man became the "project" of this cooking class. He dislikes any and all fruits and veggies. The chef and nutritionist had taken it upon themselves to get him to try and like them. At the last class (which he had to miss due to Driver's Education class), we were given chocolate cupcakes. However, they were "special" ones. Inside were pureed beets, carrots, and spinach and they were the best chocolate cupcakes I've ever had. Lego-Man thought so too.

We had cooking class tonight. It was a fun one. We met at the local Farmer's Market. We made ranch dressing and as well as toasted/dipped bread (super yummy!).

After that we went for a one mile walk. There is a walking path along the river with exercise equipment along it. It was neat to see it and try it out. All the equipment uses your own body weight and is designed to be used outside.

When we got back to the Farmer's Market we were given a shopping challenge. We had $20 and about 15 minutes to purchase an entire meal from the Market. We were given points for various things....like hitting all the food groups and purchasing from as many vendors as possible. There were only five vendors since summer market hasn't started yet.

I ended up buying whole milk, hamburger, pretzel rolls, radishes, and salad mix. Very yummy!

Today I had to head to Lewiston to pick up a copy of my son's birth certificate. While in City Hall - as I waited for the certificate - the boys found a very cool clock that we checked out. It was as tall as two stories.

I decided not to waste the trip and checked out what was in the area we could check out. There was a fantastic exhibit at the Bates College Art Museum - space photography - so we headed there. I didn't take any photos inside, but we did snap a few around the grounds before we left.

Day #165/175 Days

June 9, 2012

Today was the Educational Fair. Our 4-H club put it together for all the area homeschoolers. We set it up similar to the way the Fair works for 4-H. There were various categories the children could enter projects up to a certain limit. We then recruited other folks to come in and judge them using a judging rubric  Highest score won the category. We had a sponsor of the event so the first three winners in each age group (we had three) for each category won a small monetary award.

It was a very crazy busy day for me as I was the one who had to add up the scores for the kids and help pass out the awards.

Overall it was a great day and my boys each won at least one category.

While the judges were checking over the entries and scores were being added up, all the kids headed out and played a rousing game of kickball and had a squirt gun fight. Socialization at its best.

We had cooking class today. At the last class, the kids were asked to write up a recipe for a food that they wanted to make - but with a healthy twist. Today they made the items my boys wrote up. This included breaded mozzarella sticks, homemade chicken nuggets, and Rice Krispie Treats with cinnamon & apples added to them. YUM!

Happy loves peeling garlic.

Day #163/175 Days

June 4, 2012

Our 4H club has been working very hard to get ready for Fair Season. Our educational project is about ballistics. Today we made catapults. We started with the above materials and ended up with what you see below. The big one is a rat trap. The other two are mousetraps and it was "boys vs. girls."

After they were constructed the fun really began. Using mini-marshmallows as ammo, the kids went outside to see how far they would fire. They went far!!! This was definitely a fun time.

We used the tutorial on this website to make our catapults.

Solar System

Today we headed south and went to the Planetarium. This was very cool. We were able to customize our trip by picking the shows we wanted to see and we filled the place. We had close to 50 people come to this trip.

And many of the parents may or may not have taken a bit of a snooze during the show. It was dark. The kids were contained. It was warm. It was great.

I did think the shows a bit dated. But this is one place I'd love to head to again.
