June 20, 2012

Cooking Class again today. We're nearing the end, but it's been a lot of fun and we certainly have learned quite a bit.

We made a fruit salad today.

We also made homemade salsa (and toasted our own chips).

We also made our own "soda" with seltzer water and juice.

There is a story behind this photo....Lego-Man became the "project" of this cooking class. He dislikes any and all fruits and veggies. The chef and nutritionist had taken it upon themselves to get him to try and like them. At the last class (which he had to miss due to Driver's Education class), we were given chocolate cupcakes. However, they were "special" ones. Inside were pureed beets, carrots, and spinach and they were the best chocolate cupcakes I've ever had. Lego-Man thought so too.

We had cooking class tonight. It was a fun one. We met at the local Farmer's Market. We made ranch dressing and as well as toasted/dipped bread (super yummy!).

After that we went for a one mile walk. There is a walking path along the river with exercise equipment along it. It was neat to see it and try it out. All the equipment uses your own body weight and is designed to be used outside.

When we got back to the Farmer's Market we were given a shopping challenge. We had $20 and about 15 minutes to purchase an entire meal from the Market. We were given points for various things....like hitting all the food groups and purchasing from as many vendors as possible. There were only five vendors since summer market hasn't started yet.

I ended up buying whole milk, hamburger, pretzel rolls, radishes, and salad mix. Very yummy!

We had cooking class today. At the last class, the kids were asked to write up a recipe for a food that they wanted to make - but with a healthy twist. Today they made the items my boys wrote up. This included breaded mozzarella sticks, homemade chicken nuggets, and Rice Krispie Treats with cinnamon & apples added to them. YUM!

Happy loves peeling garlic.

May 23, 2012

Today was a shortened day.

We had piano lessons (20-30 mins each).

Then we had our second cooking class. While the boys aren't enjoying having to actually eat the food (with the exception of my youngest), they are having a good time during the actual prep and cooking. The classes run two hours.

This afternoon we started our new cooking class. This is a new community program. We are participating with another family. Each week we are meeting to learn about nutrition and how to cook healthy meals. The class is being taught by a local chef and a local personal trainer/nutritionist.

Each class has the children preparing the food and then we all sit down to eat it together before we leave. We also take home groceries in order to recreate the meals. It's a free program as well. I like that the kids are doing the work. The rule (for my very picky older boys) is that they have to try all the food. They may not like it, but they do have to taste it.
