Class was fun today. We began by listing what our favorite fast food meal would be. Then our chef put it together for us! Or rather, all the fat included in the meal on a hamburger roll. Here was Happy's:

It is a salad and chips from Subway.

The meal we made today were burgers. We mixed bison burger and turkey burger together (mainly to help extend the bison burger since it's a bit pricey). The burger was put on an Ezekiel bread English Muffin (yum!). We also made sweet potato French fries and also had watermelon. There were various toppings as well that could be added. This was one of our favorite meals we've made to date.

Day #158/175 Days

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

May 23, 2012

Today was a shortened day.

We had piano lessons (20-30 mins each).

Then we had our second cooking class. While the boys aren't enjoying having to actually eat the food (with the exception of my youngest), they are having a good time during the actual prep and cooking. The classes run two hours.

Day #157/175 Days

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

May 22, 2012

Today was a "real life" / unschooling day.

  • We began our day at the Social Security Administration. I needed to replace Social Security cards that were misplaced years ago.
  • While we were driving we listened to one of our favorite audio dramas - Jonathan Park.
  • I took a bike ride with my two youngest boys.'

  • We visited my sister and watched How Big is Our God video.
  • The boys then microwaved Ivory soap and ended up with this:

  • We also microwaved grapes, but did not dry them first. It didn't flash as much as the video linked shows.
  • The boys also made film rockets and had a lot of fun setting them off. This was to make sure we could  recreate it all when we got together with our 4H club to do this.

Day #156/175 Days

Monday, May 21, 2012

May 21, 2012

Our 4H club is working on ballistics. Today we decided to do the fun and messy Diet Coke and Mentos experiement....with a twist. However, we decided to test all kinds of soda and both mint and fruit Mentos. We then graphed the results. We found that generic Cola actually worked way better than Diet Coke. Thankfully we had a brave teen in our club who was willing to do some of the experiment as well as a Dad who had the day off. That left the moms to take photos and help with the graphing.

This afternoon we started our new cooking class. This is a new community program. We are participating with another family. Each week we are meeting to learn about nutrition and how to cook healthy meals. The class is being taught by a local chef and a local personal trainer/nutritionist.

Each class has the children preparing the food and then we all sit down to eat it together before we leave. We also take home groceries in order to recreate the meals. It's a free program as well. I like that the kids are doing the work. The rule (for my very picky older boys) is that they have to try all the food. They may not like it, but they do have to taste it.

We had our weekly 4-H meeting today (2 hours).  We decided to focus on ballistics this year. Today we made our own safety glasses out of clear 2-liter soda bottles.

The kids are really looking forward to the next step...making catapults out of mousetraps!

Day #151/175 Days

Thursday, May 10, 2012

May 10, 2012

We spent a fun time at our church this morning. We had a rep from the Geographic Alliance come out with a very large map of the United States. Ms. Lahti used to be a local teacher and did very well with the kids.

I had my "extra" kids today (Miss H & Mr. H) and they joined right in. We had children ranging in age from three all the way up to sixteen. It was a great hands on learning experience.

Day #149/175 Days

Monday, May 7, 2012

May 7, 2012

Our 4-H group has set up some pottery classes at a local store. It's a pretty small studio so when all of us show up, we pretty  much fill the space! The neat thing is it's located in the old county jail building. The studio  is located in the garage space where the police cars would pull in to bring prisoners to the jail. This was a fantastic late spring day, so the garage door was open which made it feel a bit more open and airy in there.

Anyway.....

This class was one of two where the kids were making mugs. Today they created them. They will be fired and then we'll go back and paint and glaze them and they'll have one more firing.

My boys really enjoy these classes. As a bonus, it helps the boys with their Arts & Crafts Project Record for their 4-H program.

Day #148/175 Days

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

May 2, 2012

We had a fantastic time today at one of our favorite places to go - the Waterville Opera House.

Every year they put on four "educational" shows for school aged children and the admission is extremely affordable ($3/a child). All we have seen have been extremely well done.

Today we saw an adaptation of the book Skippyjon Jones. I wasn't familiar with book so neither were any of my boys. I made my sixteen year old come with us. What I loved about the play though, was 1) it was made into a musical and 2) they threw in some jokes that only the adults in the audience would get. I exchanged many a glance and a laugh with my oldest as we caught things that the other boys missed.

It was definitely an enjoy outing. We look forward to each play.
